The heart and taste of Dawn

Dawn, the co-founder of the Taiwanese restaurant Ben’s Bowl at Lyon, talked about her career and private life in her memoir “The heart and taste of Dawn”. She was born and raised in Taiwan where she gets married with her French husband. They spent almost ten years in several countries namely Thailand, Poland and Tunisia as an expat family. Two children were born in Tunisia. Since 2008, the family has been living in France.

Dawn is a gourmand but knew nothing about cooking until she lived abroad. She appreciates the diversity of cuisine and sometimes misses the flavor of her hometown. That’s how she started learning cooking.

She put her feet in her husband’s shoes so she tried to make French dishes in Thailand. Her French mother in law brought her a French recipe book when her parents in law visited Thailand. She learnt not only the recipes but also the language thanks to this book. Even though the online recipe book is common nowadays, she still keeps this book as a priceless souvenir.

The days in Tunisia allowed Dawn to explore more possibilities in her life. She was close to a Thai neighbor who cooks very well. Dawn hung out with her a lot and helped her catering business sometimes. It was rare that a female driver delivered food in Tunisia. Dawn enjoyed the compliments from people who liked her food. This led her to sign up at the institute of Paul Bocuse after she moved to Lyon.
